Aquatint and stipple, partly printed and partly hand-coloured,
Sophia Western is the heroine in Fielding's novel 'Tom Jones'. Beneath the title is a four-line inscription, ' Adorned with all the charms in which Nature can array her; bedecked with beauty, youth, sprightliness, innocence, modesty and tenderness, breathing sweetness, from her rosy lips, and darting brightness from her sparkling eyes the lovely Sophia comes!' Here she is in a Regency dress rather than an early 18th century one. This print is sometimes known as the 'Skipping Girl': physical exercise has disturbed her bodice. Provenance: Philips Trust
